Director of Software Engineering

About the Role: 

We take on the complex logistics of running every department in a hotel through a unified platform. Our mission is to improve the hospitality experience through technology built for the industry. Our vision is building a global operating system for delivering hospitality that guests dream of.

ALICE is looking for a Software Engineering leader to help the technology team transition from the current water-scrum-fall process into Agile. As the company and product have grown current process has not been able to scale with that growth, causing delays in the delivery of value to users. The current process is based on functional silos (Engineering, Product, Quality, Design) causing a number of problems related to communication flow, alignment and overall ownership of delivery. Software Engineering is the largest team in the company and we need to evolve our operation in order to continue scaling effectively. This includes hiring leadership, changing team structures, roles, responsibilities, and product development lifecycle. The Director will become a key player in the Technology Division and report to the VP of Engineering who also oversees DevOps and Platform Engineering. They will be working directly with the heads of Design, Product, and Quality.  



General Background

  • Computer Science Degree at University
  • Growing an Engineering department within a startup
  • Leading a team of 20+ and growing it to 50+
  • Building, implementing, and iterating on successful Agile practices and principles
  • Practical experience with Scrum (and ideally other methodologies) in the past
  • Managing and hiring remote teams
  • Managing Engineering Managers
  • Holding and training standards of excellence
  • Identifying, hiring, and coaching staff
  • Managing performance and firing underperforming staff
  • Organization and context-switching: focus on a number of initiatives, simultaneously.
  • An ability to forge strong and effective partnerships with peers and executives across multiple departments, aligning on shared goals without compromising clarity or accountability

Software Engineering

  • A wealth of technical knowledge and expertise, backed by experience doing world-class work
  • Managing Software Development Lifecycle SOPs
  • Improving a software delivery pipeline, reducing defect rate and speeding up releases
  • Experience scaling distributed software systems
  • Working with multiple stakeholders across the company to communicate and gather info
  • Resource planning and management of competing priorities

Automated Testing

  • Experience working with and directing Test Automation (including Load Testing)
  • Experience creating a Quality culture with Engineering
